Downside of Dwelling

July 12, 2021 by Barb Earle

Downside of Dwelling

Do you ever experience upsetting thoughts that kept repeating, repeating and repeating?

You might be on the downside of dwelling. Pretty easy thing to do nowadays.

Too much time dwelling is actually called rumination; the state of repeating the same thought. It’s when problem-solving or clinging to a circumstance turns into worrying about the future or feeling regret about the past. This state causes excessive anxiety and depressive moods. We become miserable. Sound familiar?

There is a solution; it’s called mindful rumination. And, all it takes practice.

  • When you catch yourself dwelling STOP.
  • Notice what’s happening.
  • Then choose a meaningful activity that occupies and distracts your mind.
  • Read, write, draw, move, you choose.
  • Repeat as often as needed.

Daydreaming and rumination are all part of the default mode network of our brain. They are both natural processes. The more we become aware of what our brain is capable of, the more power we have to change how we think and act.

Remember this motto;  Danger of dwelling? try distraction.

Let the neuroscience of your brain and body do the rest.
