Happy New Years to You & Yours.
I hope you are Happy, Healthy and ready to Dive into 2021. Ditch New Year’s Resolutions! Try Novelty instead!
Socrates believed that our soul is closer to movement than fixity, and loss of soul (& Brain) is the condition of being stuck.
Does this sound like New Year’s Resolutions? We’re stuck and feel compelled to change? Consider using the neuroscience of novelty over painstaking sheer determination when it comes to making your new year resolutions.
Our brain like our soul loves to be closer to movement. Movement for the sake of this blog comes in the form of Novelty. Our brain is stimulated during novelty, interesting and intriguing experiences. It forms new neural pathways where none existed before. With repetition, this pathway becomes a habit. Our brain thrives on this process. That’s its job!
This works in our favour: Novelty enhances neuroplasticity, our brain’s ability to change. A necessary process when generating new habits. Focus on novel ways to create new habits over ‘fixing’ past ones. Let those fade away from lack of use.
For example: two statements,
“I’d like to try new ways of being active”
“I’ve been inactive so I have to exercise”.
Feel the difference?
The first one creates a sense of intrigue, of novelty, of possibility. The second creates a sense of drudgery.
Ditch the New Year’s Resolutions.
Use novelty to design your New Year’s habits.
Seek it out!
Get Create.
Your Brain will gladly help you.
That’s its job!
Keep your Soul from being stuck!
Move closer to movement than fixity.
Thank you Socrates.
Thank you Brain.
Until we meet in Person.
Brain to Brain.
Heart to Heart.
Ciao!
