Feeling stuck? Try the BS Approach

July 12, 2021 by Barb Earle

Find yourself worrying about the future or regretting the past?
Too much rumination?

Try the BS approach.

To begin:
STOP

Carry out the B
Breathe:
Notice the rhythm of your breath and start to lengthen both your inhale and exhale.

Carry out the S
Senses:
Acknowledge:

• 5 things you can see.
• 4 things you can touch
• 3 things you can hear
• 2 things you can smell
* 1 thing you can taste

Feeling exhausted and burnt out?

Try the BS approach.

To begin:
STOP

Carry out the B
Breathe:
Notice the rhythm of your breath and start to lengthen both your inhale and exhale.

Carry out the S
Senses:
Acknowledge:

• 5 things you can see.
• 4 things you can touch
• 3 things you can hear
• 2 things you can smell
• 1 thing you can taste

In both cases, the BS approach moves you away from ineffective thinking and moves you toward effective thinking.

What’s going on in your brain:
There are two networks in your brain:•

• the default mode network in your brain is the place to dream and envision the future;

• the task-positive network work is the place to focus on tasks and orient your brain towards a goal. When you stay too long in either one and feel worried or exhausted the best solution is to intentionally activate the other correlated network, which is exactly what the BS approach does.

Let the neuroscience of your brain do the rest.
